McCradden Lab Team

Dr. Melissa McCradden, Bioethicist with The Hospital for Sick Children and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, provides an update on the ‘Explain AI 4 Kids’ study.

The movement toward data-driven health systems and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) brings about unique ethical challenges. To engender trust and align values, healthcare institutions must understand the moral intuitions of patients and families regarding the use of their data and the integration of new technologies. Few studies have queried the views of young people limiting our understanding of what it takes to hold their trust and meet expectations.

The ‘Explain AI 4 Kids’ study led by Dr. Melissa McCradden engages children and youth to understand what they think about AI, how they think AI should be used, and how they wish to get information about AI in healthcare. To explore these themes, qualitative interviews were conducted with 28 pediatric patients, and a participatory mixed methods workshop was hosted integrating discussion and interactive surveys. A public webinar was held for all patients and their families to share with the community the value of health data collection, responsible data use, AI in medicine, research on AI, and the importance of engaging children and youth. One outcome of this work includes a consultative report co-developed with children and youth describing their views regarding important ethical themes for AI and normative recommendations.
