SPEAKER:
Dr. Serene Kerpan is a Professor at the Vancouver Island University, Associate Professor at the Ontario Tech University, and Affiliate Scientist at ICES. Her research is centered on perinatal and Indigenous child health. Through community-engaged scholarship, she partners with organizations and First Nation communities to investigate and address health challenges of importance to the people and communities she works with. Currently, her research is focused on prenatal opioid exposure in First Nation communities. She is the Research Associate Lead for the I-HeLTI (Indigenous Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative) Project, a longitudinal study on perinatal health led by Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council.
TITLE: Relationships, Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility: The Foundations of Trust and Engagement with Indigenous Communities
DESCRIPTION:
This session will support trainees in understanding what underpins successful research partnership with Indigenous communities. Foundational theories and central tenets of research with Indigenous communities will be discussed, followed by a deeper examination of the way in which core principles can be actualized.
OBJECTIVES:
- Describe fundamental principles for working with Indigenous communities.
- Outline best practices for realizing principles.
- Provide clear examples of best practices in forming genuine partnerships with Indigenous communities.
