TITLE: Personal Stories — How to tell them and what to consider in the patient engagement space
DESCRIPTION:
Storytelling is a powerful knowledge-sharing tool that helps people with lived experience connect with their audience and make an impact, whether their goal is to inform research, improve understanding, or promote change in service design and policy. For clinicians, researchers, and knowledge translation practitioners working with patient advisory groups or engagement initiatives, it's important to be intentional about how storytelling is invited, supported, and used. Creating space for storytelling and supporting advisors with tools to share their stories safely can help foster shared learning and elicit powerful impact stories; however, there are challenges to consider. In this abbreviated workshop, we will review the basics of storytelling, explore the benefits and risks of sharing personal stories, and discuss how to support patient partners in ways that respect their comfort and lived experience. There will be 15 minutes reserved for questions.
OBJECTIVES:
Participants will:
-
Learn the fundamentals of good storytelling
-
Watch a live story performance and analyze it as a group
-
Discuss the risks and benefits of sharing a personal story
